For each difference in level, add the odds (handicap) for that section as shown at the right, calculating upward toward the higher ranked player.
An Iron Knight receives 13 points (4 + 3 + 3 + 3) versus a Silver Knight.
A Scout receives 12 points (4 + 4 + 4) from a Bronze Knight.
Odds are designed to give a large advantage to the lower-ranked player, so they have more practice actually winning games, which increases confidence and improves endgame technique.
For a CHALLENGE game, the lower-ranked player plays up a rank. Players always have the choice not to play at odds,

The rank of Squire requires a legal-moves game to ensure that the player knows the rules of the game. USCF ratings for each rank are very general approximations.
